WHAT IS SPIRITUAL MATURITY?
|
“…In the unity of common faith, and knowledge of the Son of God, we arrive at real maturity – the measure of development which is meant by ‘the fullness of Christ.'” Ephesians 4:13 (Ph)
Spiritual Maturity is .
“For from the very beginning God decided that those who came to him … should become like his Son….” Romans 8:29(LB)
Being like Christ is possible when we have the Spirit of Christ — the Holy Spirit — controlling our lives.
“But when the Holy Spirit controls our lives, he will produce this kind of fruit in us: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.” Galatians 5:22-23 (NLT)
THE FRUIT OF THE SPIRIT IS…
Two Approaches to Spiritually Mature Christian Living:
1) Negative ( ) “trying not to do wrong”
2) Positive ( ) “bearing fruit”
Christian Living is letting the Spirit and personality of Jesus Christ shine through us (“Christ in you” Colossians 1:27 NKJV) and is best accomplished by allowing Christ to “bear fruit” through you.
Christian living should not be a struggle. Rather it should be a free flow of the Spirit that produces fruit. Then why are there struggles?
WALKING IN THE SPIRIT: (Galatians 5:16-26)
So I advise you to live according to your new life in the Holy Spirit. Then you won’t be doing what your sinful nature craves. 17 The old sinful nature loves to do evil, which is just opposite from what the Holy Spirit wants. And the Spirit gives us desires that are opposite from what the sinful nature desires. These two forces are constantly fighting each other, and your choices are never free from this conflict. 18 But when you are directed by the Holy Spirit, you are no longer subject to the law. Galatians 5:16-18 (NLT)
______________________________________________________________________________.
9 But you are not controlled by your sinful nature. You are controlled by the Spirit if you have the Spirit of God living in you. (And remember that those who do not have the Spirit of Christ living in them are not Christians at all.) Romans 8:9 (NLT)
19 When you follow the desires of your sinful nature, your lives will produce these evil results: sexual immorality, impure thoughts, eagerness for lustful pleasure, 20 idolatry, participation in demonic activities, hostility, quarreling, jealousy, outbursts of anger, selfish ambition, divisions, the feeling that everyone is wrong except those in your own little group, 21 envy, drunkenness, wild parties, and other kinds of sin. Let me tell you again, as I have before, that anyone living that sort of life will not inherit the Kingdom of God. Galatians 5:19-21(NLT)
22But when the Holy Spirit controls our lives, he will produce this kind of fruit in us: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23gentleness, and self-control. Here there is no conflict with the law.
“Those who belong to Christ Jesus have nailed the passions and desires of their sinful nature to his cross and crucified them there. 25 If we are living now by the Holy Spirit, let us follow the Holy Spirit’s leading in every part of our lives. 26 Let us not become conceited, or irritate one another, or be jealous of one another.” Galatians 5:24-26 (NLT)
“Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me. 5 “I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing. 6 “If anyone does not abide in Me, he is cast out as a branch and is withered; and they gather them and throw them into the fire, and they are burned. 7 “If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, you will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you. 8 “By this My Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit; so you will be My disciples.” John 15:4-8 (NKJV)
FACTS ABOUT SPIRITUAL MATURITY
“You have been Christians for a long time now, and you ought to be teaching others, but instead … you need someone to teach you … When a person is still living on milk, it shows he isn’t very far along in the Christian life … He’s still a baby Christian!” Hebrews 5:12-13 (LB)
“Learn to be mature.” Proverbs 8:5 (GN)
“Continue to grow in the grace and knowledge of our savior Jesus Christ.” 2 Peter 3:18 (GN)
“Take the time and the trouble to keep yourself spiritually fit.” 1 Timothy 4:7b (Ph)
“Discipline yourself for the purpose of godliness.” 1 Timothy 4:7b (NASB)
“For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God.” Romans 8:14 (NKJV)
UNDERSTANDING DISCIPLESHIP
SEVEN PRACTICES OF A DISCIPLE
HOW CAN I BECOME A DISCIPLE? Develop .
THE SEVEN PRACTICES OF A DISCIPLINED FOLLOWER OF CHRIST:
DEFINITION OF A PRACTICE:
A practice is a habitual act or action. It is a continual, often unconscious inclination to do a certain activity acquired through frequent repetition. It is the repeated performance of an activity to perfect a skill — or in this case Christian character and spiritual maturity.
To benefit from a practice, you must _______________________________________ – it cannot be forced on you!
Session Two |
The Practice of Bible Study
The Bible is Unique and Wonderful
Because the Bible is ________________________________________, we must make reading it words and studying it’s truths a priority in our daily lives.
The Self-Feed Concept:
Spiritual Maturity implies that an individual takes personal responsibility for their __________________________ _____________________________. They move beyond dependence on others to provide for them. Notice the progression in spiritual maturity as written about in the New Testament:
1 Peter 2:1-3 “Therefore, laying aside all malice, all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and all evil speaking, 2 as newborn babes, desire the pure milk of the word, that you may grow thereby, 3 if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is gracious.”
1 Corinthians 3:1-4 “And I, brethren, could not speak to you as to spiritual people but as to carnal, as to babes in Christ. 2 I fed you with milk and not with solid food; for until now you were not able to receive it, and even now you are still not able; 3 for you are still carnal. For where there are envy, strife, and divisions among you, are you not carnal and behaving like mere men?”
Hebrews 5:12-14 “For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the first principles of the oracles of God; and you have come to need milk and not solid food. 13 For everyone who partakes only of milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, for he is a babe. 14 But solid food belongs to those who are of full age, that is, those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.”
The writer of Hebrews shows his frustration with supposedly mature believers who should be spiritually mature enough to teach and feed others by now but instead have not progressed past the infant stage. Your goal as a growing Christian should be to progress — to grow past the infant stage where you depend on others to feed you, to the stage where you can chew solid food on your own, and further to the stage where you can not only feed yourself but feed others as well.
Key: Taking Personal Responsibility for Your Own Spiritual Growth – requires your effort but not an attitude of earning!

SIX WAYS TO GET A “GRASP” ON YOUR BIBLE
1) How to Hear God’s Word
“Faith comes from hearing the Word of God.” Romans 10:17
Ways to Hear God’s Word
The Bible on CD / MP3
Church services & studies
Sermon & Lesson CD’s (now lessons and sermons are available on the ALC website)
Teaching & Preaching DVD’s
PROBLEM: We forget _____________ of what we hear after 72 hours.
Improve Your Hearing:
“He who has ears to hear, let him hear!” Luke 8:8 (NKJV)
“How sweet are your words to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth!” Psalm 119:103 (NKJV)
11 “This story is about some of those people. The seed is the Word of God. 12 The seeds on the road are those who hear the Word, but no sooner do they hear it than the Devil snatches it from them so they won’t believe and be saved. 13 “The seeds in the gravel are those who hear with enthusiasm, but the enthusiasm doesn’t go very deep. It’s only another fad, and the moment there’s trouble it’s gone. 14 “And the seed that fell in the weeds—well, these are the ones who hear, but then the seed is crowded out and nothing comes of it as they go about their lives worrying about tomorrow, making money, and having fun. 15 “But the seed in the good earth—these are the good-hearts who seize the Word and hold on no matter what, sticking with it until there’s a harvest. Luke 8:11-15 (MSG)
“Consider carefully how you listen …” Luke 8:18 (NIV)
2) How To Read God’s Word
“Happy is the one who reads this book … and obeys what is written in it!” Revelation 1:3 (GN)
How often should I read God’s Word? .
“(The Scriptures) shall be his constant companion. He must read from it everyday of his life so that he will learn to respect the Lord his God by obeying all of his commands.” Deuteronomy 17:19 (LB)
If I read approximately _____ minutes a day, I can read through the Bible once a year. (See Appendix 1 / Bible Reading Schedules)
3) How To Study God’s Word
“… they accepted the message eagerly and studied the Scriptures everyday …” Acts 17:11 (Ph)
“Be a good workman … Know what His Word says and means.” 2 Timothy 2:15
The difference between reading and studying the Bible is that you _______________ _______________ when you study.
What is the secret of effective Bible study? Knowing how to ________________________________________________.

|
EXCUSES OF FEAR “I’ll fail – I can’t live it” Hebrews 7:25 “I’m afraid of the Devil’s power” 1 Jn. 4:18-19 “What will others think?” Acts 5:29 |
EXCUSES OF ATTITUDE “Some other time – not now” James 4:14 “There is too much to give up” Mark 8:36 “I like my sin” James 1:15
|
OTHER EXCUSES “I believe in reincarnation” Hebrews 9:27 “There is no life after death” Matt. 22:31-32 “My religion believes differently” John 3:17-18 |
5) How to Meditate on God’s Word |
“(Those) who are always meditating on His Laws … are like trees along a river bank bearing fruit … they never wither and whatever they do prospers.” Psalm 1:2-3 (LB)
Meditation is about a Bible verse in order to discover how I can apply its truth to my own life.
WHY MEDITATE ON SCRIPTURE?
” … Your life is shaped by your thoughts.” Proverbs 4:23 (GN)
” … Be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” Romans 12:2 (NKJV)
“As we … contemplate the Lord’s glory, we are being transformed into His likeness …” 1 Corinthians 3:18
“If you live your life in Me, and my words live in your hearts, you can ask for whatever you like, and it will come true for you.” John 15:7 (Ph)
” … Meditate on (the Word) day and night, so you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.” Joshua 1:8 (NIV)
SIX WAYS TO MEDITATE ON A VERSE
1. Picture it! Visualize the scene in your mind. 2. Pronounce it! Say the verse aloud, each time emphasizing a different word. 3. Paraphrase it! Rewrite the verse in your own words. 4. Personalize it! Replace the pronouns or people in the verse with your own name. 5. Pray it! Turn the verse into a prayer and say it back to God. 6. Probe it! Ask the following nine questions: |
Is there any…
6) How To Apply God’s Word
“Do not fool yourselves by just listening to the Word. Instead, put it into practice.” James 1:22
” … Whoever practices and teaches these commands will be called great in the kingdom of heaven.” Matthew 5:19b (NIV)
HOW TO APPLY SCRIPTURE
1st ask: What did the verse mean to the original hearers?
2nd ask: What is the verse’s underlying timeless principle?
3rd ask: Where or how could I practice that principle?
EXAMPLE
Scriptural Passage: 1 Corinthians 8:1-13
Interpretation: Paul requested that the Corinthian Christians not eat meat offered to idols so as not to offend weaker believers recently delivered from idol worship, even though they knew the idols had no power.
Implication: Don’t do anything that offends a fellow Christian, even if the activity is not sinful in and of itself.
Personalization: Even though going to a restaurant where alcohol is served is not a sin, and I wouldn’t be tempted to sin if I went there to eat, it may not be right to take a brother who used to be an alcoholic to such a restaurant since it might tempt him to fall into sin.
Write out a sentence that describes a project or action you will take to apply the truth.
Most applications will focus on one of three relationships:
1) with God, 2) with myself, 3) with other people
Four Marks of a Good Application Project
“Now that you know these things – do them! That is the path of blessing!” John 13:17 (LB)
The Practice of Daily Devotion |
“The one who looks steadily at God’s perfect law … and makes that law his HABIT – not listening and then forgetting, but actively putting it into practice will be happy in all that he does.” James 1:25 (Ph)
HOW TO HAVE A DAILY TIME WITH GOD
“The one who looks steadily at God’s perfect law… and makes that law his HABIT – not listening and then forgetting, but actively putting it into practice, will be happy in all that he does.” James 1:25 (Ph)
DEFINITION: A time with God is a daily time I set aside to be alone with God to get to know Him through the Bible and prayer.”
Your time alone with God should be the top priority in your schedule for five reasons:
2 Chronicles 31:21 (GN)
Psalm 25:4 (LB)
Two Things to Do In a Time with God
“Ponder the path of your feet and let all your ways be established.” Proverbs 4:26 (KJV) “In all your ways acknowledge Him, and he will direct your paths.” Proverbs 3:6 (KJV)
“Commit everything you do to the Lord. Trust him to help you do it and he will.” Psalm 37:5 (LB) |
FACT: The better I get to know Christ, the more ________________________________________.

THE SECRET
I met God in the morning When the day was at its best, And His presence came like sunrise, Like a glory in my breast. All day long the Presence lingered, All day long He stayed with me And we sailed in perfect calmness O’er a very troubled sea. Other ships were blown and battered Other ships were sore distressed But the winds that seemed to drive them Brought us to a peace and rest. Then I thought of other mornings With a keen remorse of mind When I, too, had loosed the moorings With the Presence left behind. So I think I know the secret Learned from many a troubled way You must seek Him in the morning If you want Him through the day.
|
THE DIFFERENCE
I got up early one morning And rushed right into the day; I had so much to accomplish That I didn’t take time to pray.
Problems just tumbling about me, And heavier came each task; “Why doesn’t God help me?” I wondered. He answered: “You didn’t ask.”
I wanted to see joy and beauty- But the day toiled on, gray and bleak; I wondered why God didn’t show me, He said: “But you didn’t seek.”
I tried to come into God’s presence, I used all my keys at the lock God gently and lovingly chided: “My child, you didn’t knock.”
I woke up early this morning And paused before entering the day; I had so much to accomplish That I had to take time to pray.

Session Three |
The Practice of Prayer
The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much. James 5:16 (NKJV)
Continue earnestly in prayer, being vigilant in it with thanksgiving… Colossians 4:2 (NKJV)
“When you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by men.” (vs. 5)
Don’t try to .
Don’t try to .
“But when you pray go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.” (vs. 6)
“Don’t recite the same prayer over and over as the heathen do, who think prayers are answered only by repeating them again and again. Remember, your Father knows exactly what you need before you ask Him!” (vs. 7-8 LB)
Matthew 6:9-15 (NIV) — “This, then, is HOW you should pray …”
THE SEVEN PARTS OF PRAYER
“Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name …” (v. 9)
TWO KINDS OF PRAISE:
“Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise. Be thankful unto him, and bless his name.” Psalm 100:4 (KJV)
HOW TO PRAISE GOD:
1st: As you read your Bible, make a list of God’s that you discover and then review them when you pray. (See Appendix 2 / Prayer Guide #1)
Examples:
God is patient Numbers 14:18
God is merciful Numbers 14:18
God is forgiving Numbers 14.18
God knows everything 1 Samuel 2:2
God is loving 1 John 4:8
KEY: is the basis for our boldness in making requests in prayer. God answers the prayers that acknowledge who He is!
2nd: Remind yourself and affirm the God has made that are contained in the meaning of His names.(See Appendix 2 / Prayer Guide #2)
3rd: Make a list of all the that you are thankful for and review them when you pray. (See Appendix 2 / Prayer Guide #3)
“Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven …” (v. 10)
Pray for God’s will to be done in:
“Offer yourself as a living sacrifice to God, dedicated to his Service and pleasing to him. This is the true worship that you should offer.” Romans 12:2 (GN)
“Give us today our daily bread …” (v. 11)
What needs can I pray about? .
“God will supply all your needs from his riches in glory because of what Christ Jesus has done for us.”
Philippians 4:19 (LB)
“Since God did not spare even his own Son for us but gave him up for us, won’t he also surely give us everything else?” Romans 8:32 (NLT)
“You do not have … because you don’t ask God.” James 4:2 (NIV)
THE KEY: .
Write down your requests, with a promise you are claiming from the Bible, and expect an answer!
(See Appendix 2 / Prayer Guide #4)
“Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done.” Philippians 4:6 (NLT)
“Forgive us our debts …” (v. 12)
Four Steps to Forgiveness
“Examine me, O God, and know my mind; test me, and discover my thoughts. Find out if there is any evil in me”. Psalm 139:23-24
“You will never succeed in life if you try to hide your sins. Confess them and give then up; then God will show mercy to you.” Proverbs 28:13 (GN)
“When you remember your brother has something against you … go at once to make peace with him, then come back and offer your gift to God.” Matthew 5:23-24 (GN)
“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins, and purify us from all unrighteousness.” 1 John 1:9 (NIV)
Look at Paul’s prayers:
Make a prayer list of people you want to pray for. You might pray for different people on different days of the week (missionaries, family, church leadership, unsaved friends, etc.). (See Appendix 2/ Prayer Guide #5).
“And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from the evil one.” (vs. 13)
Believers face a spiritual battle everyday. Satan wants to defeat you through temptation and fear. By praying for protection, you will have the power and confidence to face every situation during the day.
“The Spirit who is in you is more powerful than the spirit who is in those who belong to the world.” 1 John 4:4 (GN)
“For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever.” Matthew 6:13b (KJV)
The Practice of Fasting
|
“But you, when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, 18 “so that you do not appear to men to be fasting, but to your Father who is in the secret place; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly.”
Matthew 6:17-18 (NKJV)
Definition: Strictly speaking, Biblical fasting is the laying aside of food for a period of time when the believer is seeking to know God in a deeper experience.
Three Main Forms of Fasting:
The Biblical Reasons behind Fasting
“But you, when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, so that you do not appear to men to be fasting, but to your Father who is in the secret place; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly.” Matthew 6:17-18 (NKJV)
God speaking to Isaiah said: “Is this not the fast that I have chosen: to loose the bonds of wickedness, to undo the heavy burdens, to let the oppressed go free, and that you break every yoke? 7 Is it not to share your bread with the hungry, and that you bring to your house the poor who are cast out; when you see the naked, that you cover him, and not hide yourself from your own flesh?” Isaiah 58:6-7 (NKJV)
But as for me, when they were sick,
My clothing was sackcloth;
I humbled myself with fasting;
And my prayer would return to my own heart. Psalm 35:13
“When I wept and chastened my soul with fasting…” Psalm 69:10 (NKJV)
So they gathered together at Mizpah, drew water, and poured it out before the LORD. And they fasted that day, and said there, “We have sinned against the LORD.” I Samuel 7:6(NKJV)
Then I proclaimed a fast there at the river of Ahava, that we might humble ourselves before our God, to seek from Him the right way for us and our little ones and all our possessions. 22 For I was ashamed to request of the king an escort of soldiers and horsemen to help us against the enemy on the road, because we had spoken to the king, saying, “The hand of our God is upon all those for good who seek Him, but His power and His wrath are against all those who forsake Him.” 23 So we fasted and entreated our God for this, and He answered our prayer. Ezra 8:21-23 (NKJV)
“Now, therefore,” says the LORD, “turn to Me with all your heart, with fasting, with weeping, and with mourning.” Joel 2:12 (NKJV)
As they ministered to the Lord and fasted, the Holy Spirit said, “Now separate to Me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.” 3 Then, having fasted and prayed, and laid hands on them, they sent them away. Acts 13:2-3 (NKJV)
“… in weariness and toil, in sleeplessness often, in hunger and thirst, in fastings often…” 2 Corinthians 11:27 NKJV) (cf. 2 Corinthians 6:5)
Do not deprive one another except with consent for a time, that you may give yourselves to fasting and prayer; and come together again so that Satan does not tempt you because of your lack of self-control. 1 Corinthians 7:5 (NKJV)
Nine Fasts God Can Use
These suggested fasts are models to use and adjust to your particular needs and desires as you seek to grow closer to God (from Fasting for Spiritual Breakthrough by Elmer L. Towns).
Purpose: “To loose the bands of wickedness” (Isa. 58:6) — freeing ourselves and others from addictions to sin.
Key Verse: “However, this kind does not go out except by prayer and fasting.” Matthew 17:21 (NKJV)
Background: Jesus cast out a demon from a boy whom the disciples had failed to help. Apparently they had not taken seriously enough the way Satan had his claws set in the child. The implication is that Jesus’ disciples could have cast out the demons had they been willing to undergo the discipline of fasting. Modern disciples often make light of “besetting sins” that could be cast out if we were serious enough to take part in the self-denying practice of fasting.
Purpose: To “undo the heavy burdens” (Isa. 58:6) — to solve problems, inviting the Holy Spirit’s aid in lifting loads and overcoming barriers that keep us and our loved ones from walking joyfully in the Lord.
Key Verse: “So we fasted and earnestly prayed that our God would take care of us, and he heard our prayer.” Ezra 8:23 (NLT)
Background: Ezra the priest was charged with restoring the Law of Moses among the Jews as they rebuilt the city of Jerusalem by permission of the King of Persia, where God’s people had been held captive. Despite this permission, Israel’s enemies opposed them. Burdened with embarrassment about having to ask the Persian king for an army to protect them, Ezra fasted and prayed for an answer.
Purpose: “To let the oppressed (physically and spiritually) go free” (Isa. 58:6) — for revival and soul winning, to identify with people everywhere enslaved literally or by sin and to pray to be used of God to bring people out of the kingdom of darkness and into God’s marvelous light.
Key Verse: “So they gathered together at Mizpah, drew water, and poured it out before the LORD. And they fasted that day, and said there, “We have sinned against the LORD. And Samuel judged the children of Israel at Mizpah.” 1 Samuel 7:6 (NKJV)
Background: Samuel led God’s people in a fast to celebrate the return of the Ark of the Covenant from its captivity by the Philistines, and to pray that Israel might be delivered from the sin that allowed the Ark to be captured in the first place.
Purpose: “To break every yoke” (Isa. 58:6) — conquering the mental and emotional problems that would control our lives, and returning the control to the Lord.
Key Verse: “He himself went a day’s journey into the wilderness…He arose and ate and drank; and went in the strength of that food forty days and forty nights.” 1 Kings 19:4, 8 (KJV)
Background: Although Scripture does not call this a formal “fast,” Elijah deliberately went without food when he fled from Queen Jezebel’s threat to kill him. After this self-imposed deprivation, God sent an angel to minister to Elijah in the wilderness.
Purpose: “To share [our] bread with the hungry” and to care for the poor (Isa. 58:7) — to meet the humanitarian needs of others.
Key Verse: “The jar of flour was not used up and the jug of oil did not run dry, in keeping with the word spoken of the Lord by Elijah.” 1 Kings 17:16 (NIV)
Background: God sent the prophet Elijah to a poor, starving widow — ironically, so the widow could provide food for Elijah. Just as Elijah’s presence resulted in food for the widow of Zarephath, so presenting ourselves before God in prayer and fasting can relieve hunger today.
Purpose: To allow God’s “light [to] break forth like the morning” (Isa. 58:8), bringing clearer perspective and insight as we make crucial decisions.
Key Verse: “And he [Saul, or Paul] was three days without sight, and neither ate nor drank” Acts 9:9 (KJV)
Background: Saul of Tarsus, who became known as Paul after his conversion to Christ, was stuck blind by the Lord in the act of persecuting Christians. He not only was without literal sight, but he also had no clue praying for three days, Paul was visited by the Christian Ananias, and both his eyesight and his vision of the future was restored.
Purpose: So “your health shall spring forth” (Isa. 58:8) — to gain a healthier life or for healing.
Key Verse: “Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king’s delicacies, nor with wine which he drank” Daniel 1:8 (NKJV)
Background: Daniel and his three fellow Hebrew captives demonstrated in Babylonian captivity that keeping themselves from pagan foods God had guided them not to eat made them more healthful than others in the king’s court.
Purpose: That “your righteousness shall go before you” (Isa. 58:8) — that our testimonies and influence for Jesus would be enhanced before others.
Key Verse: “He shall be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink” Luke 1:15 (KJV)
Background: Because John the Baptist was the forerunner of Jesus, he took the “Nazirite” vow that required him to fast from or avoid wine and strong drink. This was John’s purposefully adopted lifestyle that designated him as one set apart for a special mission. Christians have double obligations: (1) to live godly lives and (2) to actively extend their influence to others for the glory of God. “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven” (Matthew 5:16).
Purpose: That “the glory of the Lord” will protect us from the evil one (see Isa. 58:8)
Key Verse: “Fast for me… [and] my maids and I will fast…[and] I will go to the king …[and] she found favor in his sight” Esther 4:16; 5:2
Background: Queen Esther, a Jewess in a pagan court, risked her life to save her people from threatened destruction by the King of Persia. Prior to appearing before the king to petition him to save the Jews, Esther, her attendants and her cousin Mordecai all fasted to appeal to God for His protection.
Modified Fasts
Fasting can involve laying aside something other than food for a period of time such as amusements (sporting events, video games, television, music, media, novels, etc. [see 1 Corinthians 7:5].). Or it can involve eliminating certain foods from your diet like sweets, soft drinks, caffeine, etc.
For people who have medical conditions that will not allow them to go on a full fast from food, they may still partake in fasting by perhaps joining in a partial fast were they omit certain foods from their diet or goes on a schedule that includes limited eating. This schedule may consist of one meal a day. Eating only fresh vegetables for several days is also a good partial fast. Some find a rotational fast which consists of eating or omitting certain families of foods for designate periods to be helpful. For example, grains may be eaten only every fourth day. The various food groups are rotated so that some food is available everyday. (See Appendix 3 / Fasting Helps)
Preparing to Fast
How you begin and conduct your fast will largely determine your success. By following these seven basic steps to fasting, you will make your time with the Lord more meaningful and spiritually rewarding.
The Practice of Praise
|
1 Praise the LORD!
Praise God in His sanctuary;
Praise Him in His mighty firmament!
2 Praise Him for His mighty acts;
Praise Him according to His excellent greatness!
3 Praise Him with the sound of the trumpet;
Praise Him with the lute and harp!
4 Praise Him with the timbrel and dance;
Praise Him with stringed instruments and flutes!
5 Praise Him with loud cymbals;
Praise Him with clashing cymbals!
6 Let everything that has breath praise the LORD.
Praise the LORD! Psalm 150 (NKJV)
Definition: Praise comes from a Latin word meaning “value” or “price.” Thus, to give praise to God is to proclaim His merit or worth. Many terms are used to express this in the Bible, including “glory,” “blessing,” “thanksgiving,” and “hallelujah,” the last named being a transliteration of the Hebrew for “Praise the Lord.”
The Modes of Praise
Biblical Songs of Praise
Biblical Warnings about the Quality of Praise
‘These people draw near to Me with their mouth, and honor Me with their lips,
but their heart is far from Me’. Matthew 15:8 (NKJV)
But be sure that everything is done properly and in order. 1 Corinthians 14:40 (NLT)
“I hate all your show and pretense—the hypocrisy of your religious festivals and solemn assemblies. 22 I will not accept your burnt offerings and grain offerings. I won’t even notice all your choice peace offerings. 23 Away with your hymns of praise! They are only noise to my ears. I will not listen to your music, no matter how lovely it is. 24 Instead, I want to see a mighty flood of justice, a river of righteous living that will never run dry.” Amos 5:21-24 (NLT)
CORPORATE PRAYER AND WORSHIP
When the church family is together, our personal prayer and worship styles need to be in subjection to leadership and flow with the moving of God’s Spirit, so that others may be ministered to during the service. No personal prayer or worship should ever be at odds with the rest of the Body, seek to override God-ordained leadership, or attract attention to the individual.
“The spirits of the prophets are under the control of the prophets themselves. God is not a God of confusion but a God of peace.” 1 Corinthians 14:32-33
“How should one chase a thousand, and two put ten thousand to flight…” Deuteronomy 32:30 (KJV)
“But thou art holy, O thou that inhabits the praises of Israel.” Psalm 22:3 (KJV)
THE WAY WE WORSHIP
“But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him. God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.”
John 4:23-24 (KJV)
The Bible says, “…they lifted up their voice to God with one accord…” (Acts 4:24)
The Bible says, “I will declare thy name unto my brethren; in the midst of the congregation will I praise thee.” (Psalm 22:22)
The Bible says, “Make a joyful noise unto the Lord, all the earth: make a loud noise, and rejoice, and sing praises.” (Psalm 98:4)
The Bible says, “Lift up your hands in the sanctuary, and bless the Lord.” (Psalm 134:2)
The Bible says, “…all the house of Israel played before the Lord on all manner of instruments…” (2 Samuel 6:5)
The Bible says, “…O clap your hands all ye people; shout unto God with the voice of triumph.” (Psalm 47:1)
The Bible says, “Praise him with the timbrel and dance: praise him with the stringed instruments and organs.” (Psalm 150:4)
The Bible says, “Is any sick among you? Let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord: And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up…” (James 5:14-15)
The Bible says, “Even so ye, forasmuch as ye are zealous of spiritual gifts, seek that ye may excel to the edifying of the church…covet to prophesy, and forbid not to speak with tongues.” (1 Corinthians 14:12, 39)
An unbeliever can merely RESPOND to an atmosphere of worship, but a believer can CREATE an atmosphere of worship! Mature Christians are always WORSHIPPERS!

Session Three
So be careful how you live, not as fools but as those who are wise. 16 Make the most of every opportunity for doing good in these evil days. Ephesians 5:16 (NLT)
“Honor the Lord with thy substance, and with the firstfruits of all thine increase:” Proverbs 3:9 (KJV)
God has given gifts to each of you from his great variety of spiritual gifts. Manage them well so that God’s generosity can flow through you. 1 Peter 4:11 (NLT)
Clearly God’s Word shows that the Lord wants His followers to be generous with their time, treasure and talents. The Lord wants us to live wisely, honor Him with our finances, and allow His generosity to flow through us.

WHAT THE BIBLE TEACHES ABOUT TITHING
What is the difference between a “tithe” and an “offering”?
WHY SHOULD I TITHE?
“A tenth of all you produce is the Lord’s, and it is holy.” Leviticus 27:30
“Yes, you should tithe, and you shouldn’t leave the more important things undone either.” Matthew 23:23 (NLT)
“The purpose of tithing is to teach you to always put God in first place in your life.” Deuteronomy 14:23 (LB)
“Always remember that it is the Lord your God who gives you the ability to produce wealth.” Deuteronomy 8:18

“Each of you should bring a gift in proportion to the way the Lord your God has blessed you.” Deuteronomy 16:17
“God says ‘Will a man rob God? Yet you are robbing me!’ But you ask, ‘How do we rob you?’ God says ‘In tithes and offerings … Bring your whole tithe to My house.'” Malachi 3:8-10
“Bring your whole tithe to My storehouse. Test me in this” says the Lord, “and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that you won’t have room enough for it! I will prevent pests from devouring your crops and the vines in your fields will be protected from plagues.” Malachi 3:10
(Jesus) “If you really love me, do what I command.” John 14:15
“… I want you to be leaders also in the spirit of cheerful giving… This is one way to prove that your love is real, that it goes beyond mere words.” 2 Corinthians 8:7b – 8 (LB)

“On the first day of every week, set aside some of what you have earned and give it as an offering. The amount depends on how much the Lord has helped you earn.” 1 Corinthians 16:2 (LB)
How to Remember:
GIVING WITH THE RIGHT ATTITUDES
GIVE .
“For if the willingness is there, your gift is acceptable according to what you have, not according to what you don’t have.” 2 Corinthians 9:12
“Each one should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under pressure …”
2 Corinthians 9:7a

“They gave as much as they were able, and even beyond their ability. Entirely on their own, they urgently pleaded with us for the privilege of sharing in this service …” 2 Corinthians 8:3-4
GIVE .
“Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly; and whoever sows generously will reap generously.” 2 Corinthians 9:6 (NIV)
THE KEY TO GIVING
“…THEY FIRST GAVE THEMSELVES TO THE LORD … “ 2 Corinthians 8:5 (NAS)
A COMMITMENT PRAYER
“Lord, I know you love me and want what’s best for me. I recognize that all I have, or will ever have, comes from You. I am more interested in pleasing You than in having more possessions. I want You to have first place in my life and I am willing to begin tithing as You have commanded. Out of gratitude for all You’ve done for me, and in expectation that You will continue to provide for me, I commit myself to returning at least the first 10% of all I earn back to You. I want to begin investing for eternity. Help me to remain faithful to this commitment. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.”
The Practice of Fellowship
WHY IS FELLOWSHIP SO IMPORTANT?
“Let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers.“ Galatians 6:1
“You are a member of God’s very own family … and you belong in God’s household with every other Christian.”
Ephesians 2:19 (LB)
“The Christian who is not committed to a group of other believers for praying, sharing, and serving, so that he is known, as he knows others, is not an obedient Christian. He is not in the will of God. However vocal he may be in his theology, he is not obeying the Lord.” Dr. Ray Ortland
“So in Christ, we who are many form one body, and each member belongs to all the others.” Romans 12:5 (NIV)
“Let us think of one another and how we can encourage each other to love and do good deeds.” Hebrews 10:24 (Ph)
“Two are better off than one … If one of them falls down, the other can help him up. But if someone is alone and falls, it’s just too bad, because there is no one to help him … Two men can resist an attack that would defeat one man alone. A rope made of three cords is hard to break.” Ecclesiastes 4:9-10, 12 (GN)
“People learn from one another just as iron sharpens iron.” Proverbs 27:17 (GN)
“Every day … keep encouraging one another so that none of you is hardened by the glamour of sin.” Hebrews 3:13 (JB)
“Brothers, if someone is trapped in some sin, you who are spiritual should restore him gently … Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.” Galatians 6:1-2 (NIV)
“For wherever two or three have come together in my name, I am there, right among them!” Matthew 18:20 (GN)
“Whenever two of you on earth agree about anything you pray for, it will be done for you by my Father in heaven.” Matthew 18:19 (GN)
(Jesus) “My prayer for all of them is that they will be of one heart and mind… so the world will believe you sent me.” John 17:21(LB)
“God has given you some special abilities; be sure to use them to help each other …” 1 Peter 4:10 (LB)
There are different kinds of service to God … together you form the body of Christ and each one of you is a necessary part of it.“ 1 Corinthians 122:5, 27 (LB)

Two Kinds of Church Meetings
Large Group: evangelism
Small Group: evangelism
“Greet the church that meets in their home.” Romans 16:5 Also Acts 2:26, 8:3, 16:40, 20:20, 1 Corinthians. 16:19, Colossians 4:15
At Full Gospel Apostolic , we believe our church must grow and at the same time! The only way to do this is through small groups.
**Small Groups give us a means to lead people to God.**
WHAT ARE THE PURPOSES OF OUR SMALL GROUPS?
Acts 2:42-47
“They DEVOTED THEMSELVES to the apostle’s teaching …”
“…and to the fellowship …” ” … and to the breaking of bread …”
“… and to prayer …” “OUR FATHER … give US … OUR daily bread … forgive US … OUR … debts … as WE have forgive OUR debtors … lead US not into temptation … deliver US …” Matthew 6:9-13
“… they gave to anyone as he had a need …”
“… you shared with me the fellowship of giving and receiving.” Philippians 4:15 (Ph)
“… praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people.”
“And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.”
What are the Goals of our Life Groups?
HOW TO START AND MAINTAIN GOOD HABITS / PRACTICES
“If you wait for perfect conditions, you will never get anything done.” Ecclesiastes 11:4 (NLT)
STEP ONE: .
You must start with a strong desire. You must be internally motivated. External motivations do not last. If you start only half-heartedly, you will never make it to the success point.
STEP TWO: .
Begin right now! Don’t wait. Don’t procrastinate. You don’t slide into a new habit. “One of these days” never arrives. You must have a starting point. It’s easier to break a bad habit today than it will be tomorrow!
“If you wait for perfect conditions, you will never get anything done.” Ecclesiastes 11:4 (LB)
STEP THREE: .
Announce your intentions publicly. Make a covenant or resolution. The power of a vow is awesome. It is particularly powerful if you put your commitment in writing.
“Make vows to the Lord your God and fulfill them.” Psalm 76:11 (NLT)
STEP FOUR: .
Never allow an exception until the new habit or practice is securely rooted in your life. Each lapse will be fatal.
Continuity and success at the start is essential. Never be swayed by “just this once”. The act of yielding weakens the will and reinforces your lack of self-control. It takes 3 weeks to become comfortable with a new habit and it takes another 3 to 4 weeks (doing it daily) for it to become a part of your life.
STEP FIVE: .
Whenever you feel the slightest urge or prompting to practice this new habit – DO IT THEN! Don’t wait. Seize every opportunity to reinforce your habit. Those feelings will not last, so whenever you feel inclined to perform your new habit, do so!
STEP SIX: .
Get a partner who will support you and encourage you. Find someone who is willing to hold you accountable and check up on you, especially in the early days before the habit is firmly rooted in your life.
“Let us consider and give attentive, continuous care to watching over each other, studying how we may stir up and stimulate each other to … helpful deeds and noble activities.” Hebrews 1:25 (Amp)
“Two are better off than one, because together they can work more effectively. If one of them falls down, the other can help him up.” Ecclesiastes 4:9-10 (GN)
STEP SEVEN: .
Rely on God’s power to help you establish the habit. Remember, Satan does not want you to develop habits that help you grow spiritually and make you like Christ, so he will do all he can to tempt you, cause you to slip, or discourage you. Pray for God’s help!
“For the Spirit of God has given us … fills us with power, love, and self-control.” 2 Timothy 1:7 (GN)
“For it is God who is at work within you, giving you the will and the power to achieve his purpose.”
Philippians 2:13 (Ph)

SUGGESTIONS FOR BIBLE READING
Read it systematically, not randomly.
Use a bible without notes so God can speak to you.
Read it in different translations for understanding.
Read it aloud quietly to yourself.
Underline or color code key verses.
Choose a reading plan and stick with it.
A BIBLE READING PLAN
Through the New Testament in 30 Days
One Book at a Time
One of the best ways to read the Bible is to read a complete book at a time. Most of the books in this “inspired library” are short stories requiring less than an hour to read. Even the longest ones can easily be read in one afternoon. Try reading a book from beginning to end without interruption. The following list is an accurate record of the amount of time it takes the average reader to read each book of the Bible out loud at a moderately slow pace. Each estimate is rounded up to the nearest five-minute interval. Many people will read these books at a faster pace, requiring less time. You can do it – so just get started!

When possible, begin and end each day with your spouse for a brief time of praise and thanksgiving to God. Longer periods of time with our Lord in prayer and study of His Word are often better spent alone.
A dietary routine is vital as well. Dr. Julio C. Ruibal – a nutritionist, pastor, and specialist in fasting and prayer – suggests a daily schedule and list of juices you may find useful and satisfying. Modify this schedule and the drinks you take to suit your circumstances and tastes.

Fruit juices, preferably freshly squeezed or blended and diluted in 50 percent distilled water if the fruit is acid. Apple, pear, grapefruit, papaya, watermelon, or other fruit juices are generally preferred. If you cannot do your own juicing, buy juices without sugar or additives.
10:30 a.m. – noon
Fresh vegetable juice made from lettuce, celery, and carrots in three equal parts.
2:30 p.m. – 4 p.m.
Herb tea with a drop of honey. Avoid black tea or any tea with caffeine.
6 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.
Broth made from boiling potatoes, celery, and carrots with no salt. After boiling about half an hour, pour the water into a container and drink it.

Breaking Your Fast
When your designated time for fasting is finished, you will begin to eat again. But how you break your fast is extremely important for your physical and spiritual well-being.
Begin eating gradually. Do not eat solid foods immediately after your fast. Suddenly reintroducing solid food to your stomach and digestive tract will likely have negative, even dangerous, consequences. Try several smaller meals or snacks each day. If you end your fast gradually, the beneficial physical and spiritual effects will result in continued good health.
Here are some suggestions to help you end your fast properly:

Elements of Truth 101
Membership
Elements of Truth 101 is the first of Truth Church’s five basic classes:
Elements of Truth 101 is a basic introduction to Truth Church (TC) and was designed to guide new believers toward a successful Christian walk. At TC, we believe that in order for a believer to be successful in their Christian walk, they must be committed to local church membership.

What does it mean to be a Christian?

Most people live their entire lives without ever knowing “WHY?” They exist year after year with no idea of why they live or God’s purpose for their lives. The most basic question a person can ask is, “What is the meaning of life?”
Everyone wants to be happy. People try many ways:
…Some look for happiness by acquiring possessions.
…Some look for happiness by experiencing pleasure.
…Some look for happiness by gaining prestige and power.
But real happiness comes from understanding my ______________.
6
· Clear Conscience: There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death. Romans 8:1-2 (NKJV)
|
|
· Purpose: And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose. Romans 8:28 (NKJV) |
|
· Power & Strength: I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. Philippians 4:13 (NKJV) |
|
· Life & Peace: For to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. Romans 8:6 (NKJV) |
|
· Confidence: If God is for us, who can be against us? Romans 8:31 (NKJV) |
|
· Fulfillment: And my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:19 (NKJV) |
|
· Help with Weakness: Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. Romans 8:26a (NKJV) |
|
· Security: For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 8:38-39 (NKJV |
|
· Freedom: And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed. John 8:32, 36 (NKJV) |

Man has a natural desire to __________ and to ignore God’s principles for living.
“Look out for #1. Do your own thing.”
“If it feels good, do it – regardless of what God says about it.”
“It’s my life and I’ll do what I please!”
The Bible calls this attitude:__________.
Sin breaks our close relationship with God. It causes us to fear God and to try to live our lives outside of His will.
When our relationship to God is not right, it causes PROBLEMS in every area of our lives — marriage, career, relationships, finances, etc.
WHEN PEOPLE HAVE PROBLEMS, THEY OFTEN TRY MANY DIFFERENT WAYS OF COPING BEFORE TURNING TO GOD.
Even when we know that our deepest need is God, we often try wrong ways of getting to know Him:
III. What’s the solution?
8
Jesus Christ said, “I AM THE WAY, the Truth, and the Life. No one comes to the Father, except THROUGH ME!” John 14:6 (NKJV)
God Himself came to earth as a human being to bring us back to Himself. If any other way had worked, Jesus Christ would not have had to come. The Way is a Person!
JESUS HAS ALREADY TAKEN CARE
OF YOUR SIN PROBLEM!
God did this for us because He loves us and wants us to know Him.
God has already done His part to restore our relationship to Him. He took the initiative. Now He waits for each of us to individually accept what He has done for us and obey the scriptural Plan of Salvation.
9
Obey the __________.
10
Moreover, brethren, I declare to you the gospel which I preached to you, which also you received and in which you stand, by which also you are saved, if you hold fast that word which I preached to you–unless you believed in vain. For I delivered to you first of all that which I also received: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures… 1 Corinthians 15:1-4 (NKJV)
The Gospel is the _________ , __________, and ____________of Jesus Christ.
11
I apply Jesus’ death through ________________.
“…that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.” Romans 6:6 (KJV)
I apply Jesus’ burial through ________________.
“Therefore we are buried with him by baptism…” Romans 6:4 (KJV)
I apply Jesus resurrection through ______________________.
“But if the Spirit of him that raised up Christ from the dead dwell in you…shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you.” Romans 8:11(KJV)
“What shall we do?” |
Peter preached the first sermon preached in the New Testament church on the day of Pentecost (Acts 2:14 – 36). He preached the gospel of Jesus Christ including the death, burial, and His resurrection. Following Peter’s sermon, conviction fell on those that heard the word and they asked, “What shall we do?” Peter, who held the keys to the kingdom (Matthew 16: 18 – 19), answered:
“Repent, (Death) and be baptized (Burial) every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost (Resurrection).” Acts 2:38 (KJV)
Peter then went on to make it clear that this promise was available to “you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call.” Acts 2:39 (KJV)
This means you!
What’s the first step?
Repent of your sins
“If you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.” Romans 10:9 (NKJV)
“Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.” Acts 4:12 (KJV)
“If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and cleanse us from every wrong.” 1 John 1:9 (KJV)
“If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me. For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: and whosever will lose his life for my sake shall find it.” Matthew 16:24 – 25 (KJV)
“… and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.” I Corinthians 6:19 – 20 (KJV)
“But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name.” John 1:12 (KJV)
“Jesus says, ‘Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If any man hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in…’” Revelation 3:20 (KJV)
You can take this first step by praying a simple prayer of commitment to God:
“Dear Jesus, thank You for making me and loving me, even when I’ve ignored You and gone my own way. I realize I need You in my life and I’m sorry for my sins. I ask You to forgive me. Thank You for dying on the cross for me. Please help me to understand it more. As much as I know how, I want to follow You from now on. Please come into my life and make me a new person inside.”
True repentance is the first step to God!
Repentance prepares our heart to fully obey the Gospel.
What is the next step?
Be baptized in Jesus’ Name
12
13
“… the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is, eight souls were saved by water. The like figure whereunto even baptism doth also now save us (not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God,) by the resurrection of Jesus Christ … “. 1 Peter 3:20-21 (KJV)
“He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.”
Mark 16:16 (KJV)
“Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 “teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Matthew 28:19-20 (NKJV)
“… except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.” John 3:5 (KJV)
“Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins…” Acts 2:38 (KJV)
“And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord.” Acts 10:48 (KJV)
14
“One day Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee, and he was baptized by John in the Jordan River.” Mark 1:9 (NLT)
“…be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins…” Acts 2:38 (KJV)
“…arise and be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord.” Acts 22:16 (KJV)
“Christ died for our sins… He was buried…and He rose again.” 1 Corinthians. 15:3-4 (KJV)
“For you were buried with Christ when you were baptized.” Colossians. 2:12a (NLT)
“Therefore we are buried with Him by baptism into death…” Romans 6:4 (NKJV)
III. Why be baptized by immersion?
15
“… when Jesus was baptized, He went up at once out of the water …” Matthew 3:16 (Amp)
(Example) “… he commanded the chariot to stand still, and they both went down to the water, both Philip and the eunuch, and he baptized him; and when they came up out of the water …”
Acts 8:38-39 (YLT)
The Greek word baptizo means “to immerse or dip under water”.
It best symbolizes a ________________.
16
“…Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ….” Acts 2:38 (KJV)
“Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.” Acts 4:12 (KJV)
“Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Or were ye baptized in the name of Paul?”
I Corinthians 1:13 (KJV)
Paul teaches that we should be baptized in the name of the one who was crucified for us.
Notice Paul’s own baptism:
“And now why tarriest thou? Arise, and be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord.” Acts 22:16 (KJV)
“For as yet he was fallen upon none of them: only they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.” Acts 8:16 (KJV)
“And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord.” Acts 10:48 (KJV)
“When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.” Acts 19:5 (KJV)
“…so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death?” Romans 6:3 (KJV)
What about Matthew 28:19?
“Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost.”
Matthew 28:19 was obeyed in Acts 2:38. Father, Son and Holy Ghost are titles, not names. Baptism using a threefold formula was not practiced by or taught by the disciples of Jesus Christ.
What is the name of the Father?
“I am come in my Father’s name” John 5:43 (KJV)
What is the name of the Son?
“…Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name.” John 20:31 (KJV)
What is the name of the Holy Ghost?
“But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name…” John 14:26 (KJV)
Notice Luke’s version of the Great Commission:
“And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.” Luke 24:47 (KJV)
17
Every person who has ________________in Christ and has repented should be baptized.
“Those who accepted his message were baptized, and about three thousand were added to their number that day.” Acts 2:41 (NIV)
“Simon himself believed and was baptized…” Acts 8:13 (NIV)
“But when they believed Philip as he preached the Good News…and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women.” Acts 8:12 (NIV)
At Truth Church, we wait until our children are old enough to believe and understand the true meaning of baptism before we baptize them.
At Truth Church, it is a membership requirement that every member must have been baptized the way Jesus and the Apostles demonstrated, even though some of us may have been “confirmed” as children.
18
As soon as you have believed and repented!
“Those who accepted his message were baptized, and about three thousand were added to their number that day.” Acts 2:41 (NIV)
“Then Philip began with that very passage of Scripture and told him the good news about Jesus. As they traveled along the road, they came to some water and the eunuch said, “Look, here is water. Why shouldn’t I be baptized?” And he gave orders to stop the chariot. Then both Philip and the eunuch went down into the water and Philip baptized him.” Acts 8:35-38 (NIV)
There is no reason to delay. As soon as you have repented of your sins, you can and should be baptized. If you wait until you are “perfect”, you will never feel “good enough.”
Can my family be baptized together?
Yes! If each family member has repented, understands fully the meaning of baptism, and each one has personally placed his/her trust in Christ for salvation, we encourage families to be baptized at the same time. It is a wonderful expression of commitment.
However, it is important to remember that baptism is a personal statement of faith, not a family tradition. It is usually not wise to delay your baptism while waiting on other family members to repent, particularly children. This puts an undue pressure on them and delays your obedience.
What should I wear when I am baptized?
We provide baptismal robes to be used for the baptism. You may want to bring along a change of clothes to wear under the robe.
Will I have to say anything?
No. At the beginning, someone will briefly explain the meaning of baptism. A minister will introduce you, briefly lower you just under the water, and after a time of prayer you can leave the baptismal, dry off, and watch the others. Later you will be given a certificate of your baptism. We encourage you to invite all your relatives and friends to attend your baptism.
Special needs?
A private baptism can be accomplished in special circumstances.
What is the next step?
Be filled with the Holy Spirit
19
“And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh…” Joel 2:28 (NKJV)
“A new heart will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you…And I will put my spirit within you…” Ezekiel 36:26 – 27 (Amp)
“Even the Spirit of Truth…but ye know Him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you. I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you” John 14: 17, 18 (KJV)
“…this mystery…which is Christ in you, the hope of Glory.” Colossians 1:27 (KJV)
20
“Jesus answered…Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.” John 3:5 (KJV)
“Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.” Romans 8:9 (KJV)
“Now if the Spirit of Him that raised up Christ dwell in you, he…shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his spirit that dwelleth in you.” Romans 8:11 (KJV)
“…When he, the Spirit of Truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth.” John 16:13 (KJV)
“…he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever.” John 14:16 (KJV)
“…righteousness, and peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost.” Romans 14:17 (KJV)
III. How do I receive the Holy Spirit?
21
“But without Faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.” Hebrews 11:6 (KJV)
“And all things, whatsoever ye shall ask in prayer, believing, ye shall receive.” Matthew 21:22 (KJV)
“Ask and it shall be given you; seek and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you.” Matthew 7:7 (KJV)
“And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do.” John 14:13 (KJV)
“Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him and bless his name.” Psalms 100:4 (KJV)
22
You will speak with other ________________.
“And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.” Acts 2:4 (KJV)
“And they…were astonished…because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the Holy Ghost. For they heard them speak with tongues and magnify God.” Acts 10:45 – 46 (KJV)
SUMMARY:
Salvation gives our lives true meaning and purpose. The Bible makes the Gospel message plain — if we do our part and repent of our sins, and submit to being baptized in Jesus’ name, then He will wash away our sins and we can experience what those on the day of Pentecost experienced in Acts 2 when they received the Holy Spirit with the evidence of speaking in a language they did not learn.
(See Appendix 2 — TC Statement of Faith for more information on the doctrinal points covered in this first lesson.)

24
“Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold all things are become new.” II Corinthians 5:17 (KJV)
Jesus answered and said to him, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.” Nicodemus said to Him, “How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother’s womb and be born?” Jesus answered, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Do not marvel that I said to you, ‘You must be born again.’ John 3:3-7 (NKJV)
What it Means to Have a New Life |
When you are born again, you enter into a new life. You are a new person. You have become “a new creature” by being filled with God’s wonderful Spirit. You are now ready to begin to walk in newness of life with Christ.
Physically you came into this world as a baby. With each new experience life has brought your way, you have matured and continue to grow. Likewise, when you are born into the Kingdom of God you are born as a new babe and begin your journey toward spiritual growth and maturity in Christ. Elements of Truth 201 will cover spiritual maturity more fully, however, here are a few steps to help you start growing as a new believer.
Seven Things to Grow On
For whatever is born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world–our faith. 1 John 5:4 (NKJV)
“… as newborn babes, desire the pure milk of the word, that you may grow thereby…” 1 Peter 2:2 (NKJV)
All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness… 2 Timothy 3:16 (NKJV)
But He answered and said, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.’ “ Matthew 4:4 (NKJV)
But He said, “More than that, blessed are those who hear the word of God and keep it!” Luke 11:28 (NKJV)
Your word is a lamp to my feet And a light to my path. Psalm 119:105 (NKJV)
Now when the tempter came to Him, he said, “If You are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread.” But He answered and said, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.’ “ Matthew 4:3-4 (NKJV)
For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. Hebrews 4:12 (NKJV)
“… pray without ceasing…” I Thessalonians 5:17 (KJV)
“I was glad when they said unto me, Let us go into the house of the LORD.” Psalm 122:1 (KJV)
Hebrews 10:25 tells us, “…not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together…” This is a command from the Word of God because God knows that you need the fellowship of the church. Christian fellowship is vital in your Christian life. Fellowship with brothers and sisters of like faith will strengthen and encourage you in your walk with God. The new believers of the early church understood the importance of fellowship.
Acts 2:42 (NKJV) And they continued steadfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in prayers.
1 John 1:3 (NKJV) …that which we have seen and heard we declare to you, that you also may have fellowship with us; and truly our fellowship is with the Father and with His Son Jesus Christ.
Hebrews 10:24-25 (NKJV) And let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works, not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching.
Ephesians 4:11-12 (NKJV) And He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers, for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ..
Romans 12:6-8 (NKJV) Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, let us prophesy in proportion to our faith; or ministry, let us use it in our ministering; he who teaches, in teaching; he who exhorts, in exhortation; he who gives, with liberality; he who leads, with diligence; he who shows mercy, with cheerfulness.
“The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life, And he who wins souls is wise.” Proverbs 11:30 (NKJV)
Witnessing for the Lord is simply telling someone else what the Lord has done for you. You do not have to be an expert in the Bible, in fact, you don’t even have to use Bible verses to witness because a person’s most powerful witnessing tool is their own story about what God has done for them.
And He is the head of the body, the church, who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in all things He may have the preeminence. Colossians 1:18 (NKJV)
In God’s Word we are commanded to be in submission to the authority placed in our lives. God has given a divine order of authority within the church. Apostle Paul wrote that Christ is the head of the church (Colossians 1:18). Within the church, under Himself, Christ has placed leadership for the overseeing of His people.
Love Joy Peace
Longsuffering Gentleness Goodness
Faith Meekness Temperance
SUMMARY
As a new believer, your walk with God is an exciting time of growth and discovery. Make time in God’s presence, reading His Word and praying, a daily priority. Attend church services faithfully and join a small group — the fellowship of other Christians will be a blessing and strength to you. Live out your faith and obey biblical principles and see what a blessing your life will become to your family and to others. See Appendix 1 for TC’s Purpose Statements on why TC exists as a church, and Appendix 3 for TC’s Lifestyle Statement, both of which will give you more information on how our beliefs should translate into everyday practice.
Session Three |
” If it is possible, as much as depends on you, live peaceably with all men.” Romans 12:18 (NKJV)
As children of God, we should have a good relationship with members of our family, friends and associates. We frequently fail to maintain good relationships because of our sinful nature. We allow the hurts and scars of the past to control our attitudes toward others along with the habits of the old life. Paul tells us that we should be “transformed by the renewing of our minds” (Romans 12:2). This transformation changes our attitudes and helps us to live in harmony with our family, our neighbors, the church, our co-workers, and even our government.
How to Have and Maintain Good Relationships |
This is My commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. John 15:12 (NKJV)
Owe no one anything except to love one another, for he who loves another has fulfilled the law. For the commandments, “You shall not commit adultery,” “You shall not murder,” “You shall not steal,” “You shall not bear false witness,” “You shall not covet,” and if there is any other commandment, are all summed up in this saying, namely, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” Love does no harm to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfillment of the law. Romans 13:8-10 (NKJV)
And now abide faith, hope, love, these three; but the greatest of these is love.
1 Corinthians 13:13 (NKJV)
Attitude Toward Your Neighbor
Jesus taught that Christians should love each other with the same love He has toward each of us individually. James tells us that the royal law is to “…love your neighbor as yourself” (James 2:8). Paul tells us in Romans 13:10 that if we love our neighbor, we will do them no harm. Paul also tells us that of faith, hope and love — the greatest one is love.
How should Christians treat one another?
How should we forgive one another?
What happens if we do not forgive others?
Attitude In The Church
Christians must be concerned about their relationships with fellow believers. The Bible clearly teaches us how we should treat each other.
Why shouldn’t we judge our brother?
Beware of _____________________________because it results in confusion and evil things.
How will others know you are Christ’s disciple?
Attitude In The Workplace
Who gives us the power to get wealth?
Each of us has the desire to excel and succeed. However, in spite of our best efforts, we still have one other factor to consider. Psalm 75:6-7 tells us that promotion really comes from the Lord. So if the Lord is the one who promotes, then He is the one we should work to please. In fact, regarding our employment and our attitude to our employer, Paul says:
Paul tells us that our work should be done “heartily, as to the Lord and not to men”. Being a Christian is not an excuse to be lazy or slothful. Proverbs 25:19 says, “Confidence in an unfaithful man … is like a broken tooth, and a foot out of joint.” Consider these several characteristics and actions and check the ones you think make a good worker:
______ Early starter ______ Witnessing on company time
______ Clock watcher ______ Late arrival
______ Extended lunch breaks ______ Quitting early
Attitude Toward Government
Romans 13:1-7 (NKJV)
1 Let every soul be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and the authorities that exist are appointed by God. 2 Therefore whoever resists the authority resists the ordinance of God, and those who resist will bring judgment on themselves. 3 For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to evil. Do you want to be unafraid of the authority? Do what is good, and you will have praise from the same. 4 For he is God’s minister to you for good. But if you do evil, be afraid; for he does not bear the sword in vain; for he is God’s minister, an avenger to execute wrath on him who practices evil. 5 Therefore you must be subject, not only because of wrath but also for conscience’ sake. 6 For because of this you also pay taxes, for they are God’s ministers attending continually to this very thing. 7 Render therefore to all their due: taxes to whom taxes are due, customs to whom customs, fear to whom fear, honor to whom honor.
Christians should honor and pray for governing officials.
Christians should ________________.
Our Tongue Affects Relationships
Our speech is important in our relationship with people, and we need to consider how our words will affect them before they are spoken. The tongue can either build or destroy.
Jesus said that the mouth speaks about what is in the ________________.
Jesus went on to explain that we will give account for our ________________ — by them we will either be justified or condemned.
Hindrances to Good Relationships |
Improper attitudes and actions can damage any relationship. These attitudes include guilt, blame, anger, self-centeredness, and pride.
GUILT
Guilt can result from an improper relationship, attitude or action. If we have a guilty conscience, it will be difficult to reach out to love others as we should. The Bible teaches us the proper response to guilt is not to hide it but to deal with it by confessing the sin and turning away from it.
BLAME AND ANGER
Blame and anger are common responses when we have not dealt with our guilt. Often when we are confronted with our wrong action, we either blame someone else or retaliate with our anger because we got caught.
__________ Anger is a choice.
__________ Anger is always sin.
__________ Anger may result from unrealistic expectations of someone.
__________ Anger is a strong emotion.
SELF-CENTEREDNESS
Naturally we tend to focus on ourselves and our needs, but Paul tells differently.
In Romans 12:10, Paul describes three attitudes that should govern our relationship with others.
PRIDE
OFFENCES AND FORGIVENESS
Jesus told his followers that offenses would come (Matthew 18:7), and He gave specific instructions about how to handle these situations where we have either wronged someone or someone else has wronged us.
________________________________________
SUMMARY
God frees us from the penalty of sin and then enables us to function in meaningful relationships to help others. As we get to know God better, we understand more what true love is and that this love should be the motivating force in our relationships. Paul said in 1 Timothy 1:5, “Now the purpose of the commandment is love from a pure heart, from a good conscience, and from sincere faith (genuine)…”
Session Four
How to Have a Christian Family |
Wives, submit to your own husbands, as is fitting in the Lord. Husbands, love your wives and do not be bitter toward them. Children, obey your parents in all things, for this is well pleasing to the Lord. Fathers, do not provoke your children, lest they become discouraged. Colossians 3:18-21 (NKJV)
The Word of God has much to say about the home and the relationship of the family members. Success in your walk with God will depend in great measure upon establishing Scriptural relationships with other members of your family. For this reason, the enemy will try to cause confusion and strife in the home of a new Christian, to discourage and cause him to fail. However, the Word of God has clear and powerful teaching which can help us build solid, spiritual lives and homes.
In every successful organization, from the military to the church, there is structure and a chain of authority or command. Without it, the result is always chaos, disorder and confusion. God has structured the family along clear-cut lines of authority and responsibility. It is vital to recognize this structure of “Divine Order” at the beginning of your Christian walk so that you may begin to practice these principles immediately.
Divine Order for the Family |
The Apostle Paul tells us in 1 Corinthians 14:33, “For God is not the author of confusion but of peace, as in all the churches of the saints.” Paul also said in 1 Corinthians 14:40, that all things should be done decently and in order. According to Romans 13:1-2, God has ordained all authority.
God’s “divine order” for the family is found in 1 Corinthians 11:3 and Ephesians 6:1.
CHRIST
FATHER
MOTHER
CHILDREN
God’s delegated authority does not give anyone the right to become tyrants! It is not about power it is about ________________. The higher the higher your rank, the greater your duty.
What is the responsibility of leadership? Why must those in authority be very careful to execute their power correctly?
The Husband’s Responsibility to His Wife
Husbands, likewise, dwell with them with understanding, giving honor to the wife, as to the weaker vessel, and as being heirs together of the grace of life, that your prayers may not be hindered. 1 Peter 3:7 (NKJV)
Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for her, that He might sanctify and cleanse her with the washing of water by the word, that He might present her to Himself a glorious church, not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing, but that she should be holy and without blemish. So husbands ought to love their own wives as their own bodies; he who loves his wife loves himself. For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as the Lord does the church. For we are members of His body, of His flesh and of His bones. “For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.” This is a great mystery, but I speak concerning Christ and the church. Nevertheless let each one of you in particular so love his own wife as himself, and let the wife see that she respects her husband. Ephesians 5:25-33 (NKJV)
Two key words sum up the New Testament teaching of the husband’s responsibility to his wife:
HONOR
The Wife’s Responsibility to Her Husband
Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord. For the husband is head of the wife, as also Christ is head of the church; and He is the Savior of the body. Therefore, just as the church is subject to Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in everything. Ephesians 5:22-24 (NKJV)
Nevertheless let each one of you in particular so love his own wife as himself, and let the wife see that she respects her husband. Ephesians 5:33 (NKJV)
Two key words sum up the New Testament teaching of the wife’s responsibility to her husband.
SUBMISSION
Submission is one of the most beautiful concepts in the New Testament. To be submissive means to yield, be humble and obedient to ordained authority. God did not give this law of wives being submissive to their husbands because He had a grudge against women. On the contrary, He established this order for the protection of women and the harmony of the home.
A wife’s _________________________is to give of herself, her time and her energy to her husband, children and home.
Does this mean that women cannot have responsible positions of leadership and still be in God’s plan? No. Both the Old and New Testament give us examples of women that were used by God in positions of leadership.
However, the “Divine Order” of the home and family is clear and it is within that pattern that the Lord will make you a blessing to your husband, your children, your church and your community.
RESPECT
Paul emphatically states in Ephesians 5:33 that the wife is to RESPECT her husband.
The Amplified Bible defines a wife’s respect as — “She notices him, regards him, honors him, prefers him, venerates and esteems him, and that she defers to him, praises him, and loves and admires him exceedingly.”
What about unsaved husbands?
SPECIAL NOTE:
As you have already learned, it is Scripturally correct for a wife to submit to her husband as the leader of the home. However, there are times when an unsaved spouse ‘s leadership may violate the laws of God and submission is not possible. If you are facing a situation in your home in which you cannot find an answer, you should make an appointment with the pastor as soon as possible. He will give you godly counsel in the matter of your home and marriage.
Strong Faith Equals Strong Marriages — Because God is love, the closer you get to God, the closer you will get to your spouse.
Parent-Child Responsibilities
New Testament teaching concerning the responsibilities of parents to children and children to parents is summarized in the following verses.
CHILDREN
Two key word sum up the New Testament teaching of the child’s responsibility to his parents.
OBEY
HONOR
PARENTS
Below are a list of responsibilities that each parent will stand before the Lord and give an account. As Christian parents, we must be diligent to lead our children in the paths of righteousness. The eternal souls of children depend greatly on the leadership of the parents. We must never be careless concerning our parental responsibilities, after all, it was our choice to bring our children into this world.
You can’t take your home, your car, or your riches to heaven with you. But you can take your children. Be sure to put priority on the things that really matter.
1) TEACH
2) DISCIPLINE
3) PROTECT
SUMMARY
A great deal of evil has come upon the home because of the deterioration of the family and the loss of “Divine Order” within the home. “Divine Order” and diligence to our God-ordained responsibilities will place us under the authority and protection of God. We must resist Satan’s desire to undermine our homes and break down the pattern of our families. Regardless of the mistakes you have made in these areas, now is the time to set your house in order and begin to experience the blessings of God’s power and anointing continually on your home.

Truth Church’s Purpose Statements
Why we exist as a church
25
“Now I beseech you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you; but that ye be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment.”
1 Corinthians 1:10 (KJV)
The purpose of our church is summarized in a single sentence based on two key scriptures:
“We believe a great commitment to the great commandment and the great commission produce a great church!”
The Great Commandment: “Jesus said, ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart…soul…and mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself. All the Law and Prophets hang on these two commandments.’” Matthew 22:36-40 (NIV)
The Great Commission: “Jesus said, ‘Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.” Matthew 28:19-20 (NIV)
Truth Church Exists…
TC’s Core Values:
The TC Life Win:
“Connecting people to Jesus Christ and establishing them in a small group or Bible Study.”
(Small groups consist of but are not limited; Men’s Ministry, Women’s Ministry, Youth Ministry, Home Bible Study, Celebrate Recovery, Sunday School, Prayer groups etc…)
This simple statement captures all of the core values of TC. Once someone is connected to Jesus Christ, the best place for them to develop their Christian walk is in a small group setting. A small group effectively communicates God’s Word (evangelism), educates God’s people (disciples), inspires fellowship (community), demonstrates God’s love (servant ministry), and guides us in worship (stewardship).
26
Evangelism: sharing the good news with others.
“His intent was that through the church, the manifold wisdom of God should be made known…” Ephesians 3:10 (NIV)
“Anyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved. But who can ask Him to save them unless they believe in Him? And how can they believe in Him if they have never heard about Him? And how can they hear about Him unless someone tells him?” Romans 10:13-14 (LB)
Why our church must never stop growing
“The Lord does not delay and is not tardy or slow about what He promises, according to some people’s conception of slowness, but He is long-suffering (extraordinarily patient) toward you, not desiring that any should perish, but that all should turn to repentance.” 2 Peter 3:9 (Amp)
2 Corinthians 5:14; Luke 15:3-10; Matthew 9:12-13
“Go out into the country…and urge anyone you find to come in, so that My House will be full.” Luke 14:23 (LB)
“…you will be my witnesses…” Acts 1:8 (NIV)
“Under Christ’s control, the whole Body is nourished…and grows as God wants it to grow.” Colossians 2:19 (GN)
“(Jesus) I will build my church.” Matthew 16:18 (KJV)
Unbiblical excuses for not growing:
We believe our church must grow larger and smaller at the same time.
“And the Good News about the Kingdom will be preached throughout the whole world so that all nations will hear it, and THEN, finally the end will come.” Matthew 24:14 (LB)
27
Discipleship: (believers grow spiritually)
“Let us leave the elementary teachings about Christ and go on to maturity…” Hebrews 6:1 (NIV)
“Grow in grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.” 2 Peter 3:18 (NIV)
“(God) handed out gifts of apostle, prophet, evangelist, and pastor-teacher 12 to train Christians in skilled servant work, working within Christ’s body, the church, 13 until we’re all moving rhythmically and easily with each other, efficient and graceful in response to God’s Son, fully mature adults, fully developed within and without, fully alive like Christ.” Ephesians 4:11-13 (Message)
III. We exist to assimilate God’s family.
Fellowship: (believers connecting with each other)
“Everyday they continued to meet together…they broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people.” Acts 2:46-47 (NIV)
Truth Church offers a variety of ways to fellowship with other believers. Men’s and Women’s fellowship, Youth Events, Potlucks, conferences, outings small group and Home Bible Study
Small groups take place throughout TC on a regular and sometimes even daily basis – Home Bible Studies, Prayer Groups, Choir, Sunday School Classes, Cleaning Teams, etc. even today’s Elements of Truth class is an example of a small group getting together.
28
Ministry: (meeting needs with love) True ministry involves having a servant’s heart – serving one another through love.
For you, brethren, have been called to liberty; only do not use liberty as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another. For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” Galatians 5:13-14 (NKJV)
“By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.” John 13:35 (NKJV)
See also 1 John 3:16-17, Matthew 25:34-40, Hebrews 13:16, Romans 12:13
The heartbeat of Truth Church is our service to ministry. Every member needs to be a part of one.
“Now God gives us many kinds of special abilities… and there are different kinds of service to God (ministry)… All of you together form the one Body of Christ and each of you is a separate and necessary part of it.” 1 Corinthians 12:4-5, 27 (LB)
At Truth Church…
29
Worship: (expressing love to God) Worship and stewardship are related in that both worship and stewardship are based on commitment and faithfulness. True worship requires a stewardship of time, talent and treasure. Thus, worship includes being faithful in church and small group attendance, engaging in spiritual disciplines, employing God-given talents and abilities, giving toward godly causes, as well as participating in corporate worship.
“Worship the Lord your God, and serve Him only.” Matthew 4:10 (NIV)
“…True worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth…God is a spirit…must worship him in spirit and in truth.” John 4:23-24 (KJV)

TC Statement of Faith
What we believe
30
In our beliefs:
— we have unity.
“There is one Body and one Spirit…there is one Lord, one faith, one baptism, and one God and Father of us all…” Ephesians 4:4-6 (KJV)
— we have patience.
“Accept him whose faith is weak, without passing judgment on disputable matters… Who are you to judge someone else’s servant? To his own master he stands or falls… So then each of us will give an account of himself to God… So whatever you believe about these things keep between yourself and God.” Romans 14:1, 4, 12, 22 (NIV)
— we show charity.
“…If I hold in my mind not only all human knowledge but also the very secrets of God, and if I have the faith that can move mountains — but have no love, I amount to nothing at all.” 1 Corinthians 13:2 (Ph)
What we believe …
31
We believe in the one ever-living, eternal God: infinite in power, holy in nature, attributes and purpose; and possessing absolute, indivisible deity. This one true God has revealed Himself as Father; through His Son, in redemption; and as the Holy Spirit, by emanation.
1 Corinthians 8:6; Ephesians 4:6; 2 Corinthians 5:19; Joel 2:28
32
The one true God, the Jehovah of the Old Testament, took upon Himself the form of man, and as the Son of man, was born of a virgin named Mary. As Paul says, “And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory” I Timothy 3:16 (KJV).
“He came unto his own, and his own received him not” John 1:11 (KJV). This one true God was manifest in the flesh, that is, in His Son Jesus Christ. “God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself …” II Corinthians 5:19 (KJV).
We believe that, “in him (Jesus) dwelleth all the fullness of the Godhead bodily” Colossians 2:9 (KJV). “For it pleased the Father that in him should all the fullness dwell” Colossians 1:19 (KJV). Therefore, Jesus in His humanity was man; in his deity was and is God. His flesh was the lamb, or the sacrifice of God. He is the only mediator between God and man. “For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus” I Timothy 2:5 (KJV).
On His Father’s side Jesus was divine, and on His mother’s side Jesus was human. Thus, He was known as the Son of God and also the Son of man, or the God-man.
33
The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of the one true God. It lives in every Christian from the moment he or she receives it. The terms “baptize with the Holy Ghost and fire,” ”filled with the Holy Spirit,” and the “gift of the Holy Ghost” are synonymous terms used interchangeably in the Bible. It is scriptural to expect all who receive the gift, filling, or baptism of the Holy Spirit to receive the same physical, initial sign of speaking with other tongues. The Holy Spirit provides the Christian with power for living, understanding of spiritual truth, and guidance in doing what is right. It provides believers with spiritual gifts when they are saved, as well as the Fruit of the Spirit. As Christians, we seek to live under the control of the Holy Spirit.
2 Corinthians 3:17; John 16:7-13, 14:16, 17; Acts 1:8; 1 Corinthians 2:12, 3:16; Ephesians 1:13; Galatians 5:25; Ephesians 5:18; Acts 2:4, 33; Matthew 3:11
34
The Bible is God’s Word to us. It was written by human authors, under the supernatural guidance of the Holy Spirit. It is the supreme source of truth for Christian beliefs and living. Because it is inspired by God, it is the truth without any mixture of error.
2 Timothy 3:16; 2 Peter 1:20, 21; 2 Timothy 1:13; Psalm 119:105,160, 12:6; Proverbs 30:5
35
People are made in the spiritual image of God — to be like Him in character. People are the supreme object of God’s creation. Although every person has tremendous potential for good, all of us are marred by an attitude of disobedience toward God called “sin.” This attitude separates people from God and causes many problems in life.
Genesis 1:27; Psalm 8:3-6; Isaiah 53:6a; Romans 3:23; Isaiah 59:1, 2
36
We believe that we are saved by grace, through faith. The grace of God makes salvation available to us through the cross of Calvary, and it is a free gift. Before you can obey the Gospel, you must first believe the Gospel. This is where faith begins to work. However, the Bible indicates that having saving faith is more than just believing that Jesus died and rose again. True faith will cause you to follow and obey the Lord. Romans 10:16 declares that the gospel is to be obeyed. The Bible standard of full salvation is repentance, baptism in water by immersion in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and the baptism of the Holy Ghost with the initial sign of speaking with tongues as the Spirit gives utterance.
Romans 10:10 – 16; I Corinthians 15: 1 – 4; Acts 2:4, 38
37
“For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world” Titus 2:11-12 (KJV). Grace is the agent that brought salvation to us. Some have misinterpreted grace as a license to live like you want to and still be saved. This is simply not the truth. Saving grace will grant you salvation while you are still lost, undone, and imperfect, because salvation is a free gift and not of works. However, saving grace refuses to let you continue to live a sinful life. A Christian must walk with God and keep himself in the love of God and in the grace of God. When a person sins against God and does not repent, he will eventually be lost. But God’s grace gives us the power to be saved and stay saved.
1 Peter 1:3-5; John 1:17; Ephesians 2:8-9; Jude 21; John 15:2, 6; II Peter 2:20-21;
Hebrews 6:4-6
38
People were created to exist forever. We will either exist eternally separated from God by sin, or eternally with God through forgiveness and salvation. To be eternally separated from God is Hell. To be eternally in union with Him is eternal life. Heaven and Hell are real places of eternal existence.
John 3:16; John 14:17; Romans 6:23; Romans 8:17-18; Revelation 20:15; 1 Corinthians 2:7-9
APPENDIX 3
TC Lifestyle Statement
What we practice
39
Beliefs are not worth much unless they are translated into actions. Based on what the Bible teaches, we feel very strongly about the following nine practices:
40
“And all things, whatsoever ye shall ask in prayer, believing, ye shall receive” Matthew 21:22 (KJV). “And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up…The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much” James 5:15, 16 (KJV).
The examples of Jesus and the apostles make it clear to us that prayer is important and powerful. The Bible also gives us scriptural clues to the power of prayer. Add to these theological proofs the modern-day examples of prayer’s power to heal the sick and foster revival and growth among the saints and you have an equation that demands we give ample emphasis to prayer. God is still working in this world among those who know the power of prayer!
41
“Christ loves us, and by His death He has freed us from our sins and made us a kingdom of priests to serve God…” Revelation 1:6 (GN). “You are...the King’s priests…God’s own people, chosen to proclaim the wonderful acts of God” 1 Peter 2:9 (GN).
The Bible teaches that every Christian is called to “full time” Christian service, regardless of his or her vocation. We practice the truth that every believer is a minister by encouraging every member to find a place of service and ministry. Every believer has direct access to God through prayer and Bible reading.
42
“Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved” Acts 4:12 (KJV). “And whatsoever ye do in word or deed do all in the name of the Lord Jesus…” Colossians 3:17 (KJV). “Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow…and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord” Philippians 2:9,10 (KJV).
We are the people of the name of Jesus. Therefore, everything we do in the Kingdom of God we do in the name of and for the glory of Jesus. We are baptized in the name of Jesus. We pray for the sick in the name of Jesus. We cast out evil spirits in the name of Jesus. We make our petitions to heaven in the name of Jesus. This is what the believers in the New Testament church did, and this is the way that it should still be done.
43
“Be sure to set aside a tenth of all that your fields produce each year.” Leviticus 26:30 (NIV)
At Truth Church we practice tithing for the support of Christ’s body, the church, as God commands. We recognize that giving 10% of our income is the Biblical standard of giving. We also believe Christians should be joyfully involved in giving free-will offerings above the 10% that belongs to the Lord.
44
“Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have” 1 Peter 3:15. “…Not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.” II Peter 3:9. “And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem” Luke 24:47.
We believe that God has filled us with the Holy Ghost so that we can share the good news with the world. This may be in a foreign country or at our neighbor’s house. Whatever it takes to spread the gospel to the world, we are willing to do. This includes support of world missions and involvement in local outreach initiatives.
45
“For I determined not to know anything among you, save Jesus Christ and Him crucified” I Corinthians 2:2 (KJV). “For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God” I Corinthians 1:18 (KJV). “…ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ” Ephesians 2:13 (KJV).
If the message of Calvary was sufficient for Paul’s ministry and outreach, why should we change the formula? The message of the cross was preached on the Day of Pentecost, and it is still the only message to change the world. After all, our salvation, healing, justification, redemption, peace and final victory were made available to us through the blood of Jesus.
46
“Is there any God beside me? Yea there is no God; I know not any” Isaiah 44:8 (KJV) . “There is none other God but one” I Corinthians 8:4 (KJV). “I and my Father are one” John 10:30 (KJV). “…he that hath seen me hath seen the Father” John 14:9 (KJV).
Many religions believe in multiple gods or polytheism. From the beginning of the Bible to the end, the message of one God is emphasized. The divine Spirit that created the world is the same divine Spirit that was in the man Christ Jesus. This is also the same Spirit that dwells within Holy Spirit-filled believers. The Spirit of God is not divided into factions or personalities…OUR GOD IS ONE!
47
“Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord” Hebrews 12:14 (KJV). “Come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord” II Corinthians 6:17 (KJV). “Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world” I John 2:15 (KJV).
God has called us to be separate and distinct from the world. God’s holiness is absolute perfection and purity, but when holiness is applied to man it means being separated unto God. We should be willing to do anything to make ourselves acceptable to God, regardless of the sacrifice.
48
“Buy the truth and sell it not” Proverbs 23:23 (KJV). “…received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved” II Thessalonians 2:10 (KJV). “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness” II Timothy 3:16 (KJV). “Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth”
The ultimate truth is fully contained in the Word of God. The Bible makes it clear that there will be influences that will try to steal precious truth. We should safeguard truth in our heart by becoming personally familiar with the Word of God.
